Picture Project
My first initial theme were four angled shapes(squares) as seen in 5/6 of the pictures I took. But I truly love the different colored lawn chairs I found in the West Street Market.

Visual Conventions
John Taylors depiction of the signing of the peace treaty is more a representational piece of art, as for Howling Wolf's piece is more abstract. From the pieces i see from the two artists, they are both on i would say, different ends when it came to depicting this event. Howling Wolf's background is white but he fills in space with what he is accustomed to; such as the tipis, the river and trees along with more drawings of the natives compare to the "US Government." Taylor's work like said in the book, is more drawn just towards the grove area in which the treaty was signed. Taylor's work compare to Howling Wolf's drawing is a lot more organized and shows he's had some education in art and is familiar with drawing the eyes of the critics to the center; where as Howling Wolf's the eyes are bouncing back and forth, up and down, side to side to see what is happening.
Taylor's work shows basically meshed groups of Native Americans, not being able to distinguish the difference between the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and the Kiowa. Yet also, the drawing is in black and white. As for Howling Wolf's drawing in color, you can see the difference in tribes with what they are wearing and the color the tipis they sit by. Because Howling Wolf's drawing depicts mostly women, it shows that to Native American's Women have a huge role for their society to grow and run efficiently. Native American women cooked, scavenged, built baskets, were very much involved with the communities. As for Taylor's depiction, all characters drawn were men showing, women had no grasp of what was happening and were not included at the signing. It shows a huge cultural difference from Native Americans to Americans.

Role 4
I went through my art book about 10 times trying to find a piece of art that would catch my eye, and somewhat relate to role 4)
artists give form to the immaterial – hidden or universal truths, spiritual forces, personal feelings.
Then finally, after flipping individually through the pages I found on pg. 461, "Hundred of Birds Admiring the Peacocks" by Yin Hong of the Ming Dynasty (late 15th century-early 16th century)
http://amica.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/AMICO~1~1~36599~100506:Hundred-Birds-Admiring-the-Peacocks?sort=INITIALSORT_CRN%2COCS%2CAMICOID&qvq=q:AMICOID=CMA_.1974.31+;sort:INITIALSORT_CRN,OCS,AMICOID;lc:AMICO~1~1&mi=0&trs=1
This piece was created during a time where there were emperors, the way that I saw the art work was, the Peacocks were the royal family and all the birds "admiring" were the chinese people, depicting how life was back then. I couldn't find much information on this artists since it was created such a long time ago. But some information on the piece is located on the left side of the link above.

Thy Will be Done by Chester Arnold
When I first walked into the Museum, I want expecting much and I've been there a few times, so I headed directly up to Chester Arnold's exhibit. When I got to the third level, I was pleasantly amazed at what I saw. I actually enjoyed it, usually Art to me is over done to a point where the artists' really don't want to be understood and the more understood you were, the better it is appreciated. But in Chester Arnold's exhibit, There were oil paintings of everyday things that anybody can see on an everyday basis. Such as the turf of grass, the trees, a dumpster site, a river full of garbage. Images that I would never expect to be "artistic" yet he made them look better than real life.
The piece that actually caught my attention was "Thy Will be Done" even before I knew it was the Art Piece we were suppose to breakdown the meaning of. The reason it caught my attention was because of the goriness of the painting. At first glance, even To Candace Nicol, she thought nothing of it, but if you really look at it, there were murders happening, a lady coming out of a bomb shelter, slaves, police men, military men, construction workers, men drinking beers, even perhaps grave digging.
To me, the title for the painting," Thy will be Done" is simple, it took me 3 minutes to figure out what I believe Chester Arnold was trying to depict- No matter how much we rebuild society and cover what has happened in the past and how we try to learn from our mistakes, we will still have poverty, wars, murders, bad cops, basically havoc. History repeats itself, "Thy Will be Done" no matter what.
I listened in on what other students in the class had to say about the painting and what they thought the title meant, in which I thought they were going too in depth of every little detail of the painting. I looked at the painting as a whole and because of that, I feel a tad bit more artistic. ;)
